Gac Tips

Momordica cochinhinensis  Definitely nothing to get excited about for eating out of hand.  It has separate male and female plants (dioecious). You will need at least 2 female plants and 4 males to do hand pollination. Grows great here in South Florida and does tend to die back over the winter.  It is used in Vietnam as a food colouring, turning rice orange/red for a dish called xoi gac. Also high in betacarotene and lycopene.  When red food colouring was introduced to Vietnam, children started developing Vitamin A deficiency and one of the causes was traced back to lack of Gac. http://www.npnutra.com/gac_fruit.html    Ref:  Allen Sylvester – Keaau, HI
